My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I received a copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 4th book in a series. I have not read the first three, but the story worked fine as a stand alone, even if I did feel, that I had missed some back story on at least one of the MC’s as well as some of the secondary characters.
This is the kind of crime / suspense / romance story, where you just have to suspend all beliefs and go with the flow. If you do that, it works nicely as entertainment.
The action starts out on page 1, where our two MCs meet at an undercover stint, which goes wrong. Dylan takes a bullet to the shoulder and thereby saves Spence’s life. Spence is a civilian, who have somehow ended up portraying a rich buyer of forgery paintings, where as Dylan is the bodyguard of the crime boss, who is selling the paintings.
Spence is a rich, bespectacled computer geek and Dylan the uneducated but ambitious thug with a heart of gold. The two form an unlikely long distance relationship (Spence lives in San Francisco and Dylan in Portland) based on mutual lust, which quickly morphs into love.
The crime plot of the story was very thin and didn’t really compute for me. I still didn’t get why the bad guys tried to sabotage Dylan’s business and hurt André. But if I didn’t think to hard about it and ignored the fact that I didn’t really understand why Dylan and Spence were in love, didn’t feel the chemistry, then I was kept nicely entertained all the way through the book. I enjoyed the narrator a great deal and the book was fun and light. I might give another of the series a try, when Georgie’s story is out.
3 stars. A nice easy read, great narration and an entertaining way to spend a long car journey.
