Review of Special Delivery by Heidi Cullinan

Special Delivery (Special Delivery, #1)Special Delivery by Heidi Cullinan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have re-read this book several times, but this was my first (though it will not be my last) time listening to it. Iggy Toma did a fantastic job, as always. He is now forever linked to Heidi Cullinan’s stories in my mind.

I’ll be the first to admit, that this is a filthy, filthy book. Full to the brim of kinky, kinky sex. But at it’s core, it’s actually a fairy tale, a super sweet Disney movie with an OTT happy ever after, I kid you not.

Special Delivery has all of the ingredients of the classic coming of age fairy tale:
– an orphaned hero (Sam)
– an evil guardian (aunt Delia)
– a long journey, facing many obstacles
– a handsome prince (Mitch)
– a sweet, but unhelpful, friend (Emma)
– a fairy godmother (Randy)

However, none of the Disney movies I have seen have used sex as a tool to self insight and understanding. This one does. And does it well. Even if there is a LOT of sex in this book, none of it feels gratuitous. It feels like each sex scene actually teaches us something. Either about Sam, or about Sam and Mitch together. It spurs growth, either in the characters or in their relationship.
Randy may be the most unlikely of fairy godmothers, but he is that anyway. He is the key to Sam understanding Mitch and to the relationship between Sam and Mitch being an actual reality.

This is an MM classic. And if you haven’t yet read it, you should. If you have read it already you should go get the audio and enjoy this wonderful fairy tale once again narrated by the talented Mr. Toma.
